Lightning is a hazardous weather phenomenon that occurs frequently, with a global average of 46 flashes per second. Each year, approximately 6,000–24,000 people lose their lives due to lightning strikes worldwide.
In Asia, Bangladesh experiences relatively high lightning activity, ranging from 40 to 60 events per square kilometer annually. Due to the increasing number of fatalities and economic losses, Bangladesh declared lightning strikes a disaster in 2016.
Recognizing the importance of lightning safety, International Lightning Safety Day has been observed globally on June 28 since 2015. The day aims to raise awareness about lightning risks and promote improved safety measures, especially in developing countries.
Efforts have been made to strengthen early warning systems and enhance public awareness to prevent lightning-related deaths and injuries. However, broader and more coordinated action is still needed to ensure that communities receive accurate information and take necessary precautions.
Objective of the Event
Enhancing lightning forecasting systems and building public awareness are key priorities of RIMES, UNICEF, and Save the Children, in alignment with the government’s goal to minimize loss and damage caused by lightning.
