RF Working Precautions for Amateur Radio Operators
Safe operating practices for transmitters, amplifiers, antennas, feed lines and amateur-radio stations. Treat RF energy, mains electricity and antenna systems with the same care as other electrical and technical hazards.
Never work on an antenna, open transmitter, amplifier, tuner or exposed RF circuit while the station is transmitting or while hazardous voltages may still be present.
RF Exposure
RF fields are strongest close to transmitting antennas and high-power feed systems.
- Keep people away from transmitting antennas.
- Avoid touching antennas or exposed RF conductors during transmission.
- Use the lowest transmitter power needed for reliable communication.
- Position antennas away from frequently occupied areas.
- Evaluate RF exposure when using higher power or directional antennas.
High Voltage & Amplifiers
Tube amplifiers and some power supplies may contain lethal voltage even after the equipment has been switched off.
- Disconnect mains power before opening equipment.
- Never assume capacitors are discharged.
- Follow manufacturer discharge procedures.
- Keep covers and interlocks properly installed.
- Do not bypass safety interlocks.
- Service high-voltage equipment only if you are competent to do so.
Antenna & Tower Work
Tower work introduces fall, electrical and mechanical hazards.
- Never install antennas near overhead electrical power lines.
- Treat every overhead wire as energized.
- Use appropriate climbing and fall-protection equipment.
- Do not climb during rain, thunderstorms or strong winds.
- Use a helper or ground person during significant tower work.
- Inspect ropes, clamps, mast hardware and guy wires regularly.
Lightning & Grounding
Outdoor antennas can provide a path for lightning and static charge.
- Use proper station grounding and bonding.
- Install suitable coaxial surge protection where appropriate.
- Keep grounding conductors short and direct.
- Disconnect antennas when severe thunderstorms threaten, when safe to do so.
- Never handle antenna cables during an active thunderstorm.
- Follow local electrical and lightning-protection requirements.
Feed Lines & Connectors
Damaged coax, poor connectors and high SWR can create RF heating and equipment stress.
- Inspect coax cables for cuts, moisture and crushed sections.
- Ensure connectors are properly assembled and tightened.
- Use cable and connectors with adequate voltage and power ratings.
- Check SWR before prolonged high-power operation.
- Replace overheated, corroded or damaged connectors.
Operating Position
Maintain a clean, properly wired station with adequate ventilation.
- Keep transmitter and amplifier cooling vents unobstructed.
- Avoid loose power cables and exposed terminals.
- Use correctly rated fuses and circuit protection.
- Never replace a fuse with a larger value simply because it blows.
- Keep liquids away from radio equipment and mains power.
- Keep children and visitors away from hazardous station areas.
Think About RF Exposure Before Transmitting
Higher transmitter power, higher antenna gain and closer human proximity generally require greater attention.

⚠ If an Electrical or RF Accident Occurs
Do not touch a person who may still be in contact with an energized electrical source. Isolate the power source first if this can be done safely, call local emergency services when necessary, and provide first aid only within your level of training. Electrical burns and high-voltage exposure can be serious even when external injuries appear small.
